Fire engulfs Middle home, residents escape unharmed
MAYVILLE— Two people safely escaped a fire that produced “substantial” damage to their home on Sunday, Feb. 22. Occupants Morris and Tamar Williams were eating dinner at about 5:15 p.m. inside their home at 805 Route 9 S in Mayville when they heard popping noises. They checked the second floor of the residence for the origin of the noises and found it full of smoke and flames. After an unsuccessful attempt at extinguishing the fire, they were able to
leave their home unharmed.
The Middle Township Police Department responded to the scene to find the second floor fully engulfed in flames. Also responding to the scene were the Cape May Court House, Stone Harbor, Green Creek, Rio Grande and Lower Township fire departments; the Rio Grande and Middle Township rescue squads and the American Red Cross. The fire took about an hour to put out. According to Lt. Chris Leusner of the Middle Township Police Department, the home is
now uninhabitable.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office, Patrolman Robert McHale and Detective Clint Stocker.
