Record turnout expected at county polls
As of early Tuesday, Nov. 4, Cape May County election officials were already expecting a record voter turnout in the president race between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain.
County Registrar Joy Erb had no official numbers at about 12:30 p.m., but said the county was seeing voting in unprecedented numbers.
“For the first time in history, we’ve had lines in Cape May County,” Erb said.
She said there had been no significant problems reported at polling places in the county, and that this year’s turnout seems certain to break previous records.
Her office was working overtime through October to process the large number of new registrations for this election in time for the vote.
National and international media are reporting huge voter turnout throughout the country this year, with a great deal of interest in the presidential race. In some areas, voters are waiting more than an hour, or far longer where there have been problems with voting machines.
