Security guard injured in armed attack
CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – A security guard at the county social services building was injured Tuesday morning, April 8 after subduing an attacker armed with a hammer and knife, according to police.
Greg Armstrong was taken to Cape Regional Medical Center by Middle Township Rescue for treatment in the emergency room for a neck wound. Hospital officials said he was no longer in the emergency room Tuesday afternoon, and that he was not transferred to any other medical facility.
Middle Township police received a 911 call at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday reporting a man attacking a security guard with a hammer and taking him hostage at the Cape May County Social Services Building at 4005 Route 9 in Rio Grande.
Upon arrival, officers found that the Armstrong had been able to disarm and subdue Lamont Richardson, 56, of Rio Grande, according to police.
Police say an investigation revealed that the guard saw Richardson holding a hammer and confronting another man, later identified as Renardo Shockley. Armstrong disarmed the man, who then turned on him, this time armed with a knife, according to police reports.
Police say Shockley and another man helped the guard disarm Richardson and hold him until officers arrived.
Richardson was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes and unlawful possession of a weapon and taken to the Cape May County Jail. Bail was set by Municipal Court Judge David DeWeese at $200,000.
